go.unimelb usage guidelines
The service
go.unimelb is a web redirection service intended to help University staff create shorter web addresses for internal usage. The service is not intended to replace good web site structure and does not allow for new address creation. A web address must already exist at an approved domain for the link service to operate.
Who can use go.unimelb
Anyone can create a short web address to a unimelb.edu.au address.
University Staff members with a valid central email account can log into the system to create short web addresses to any site.
Benefits of this service
Main benefits of being able to create shorter web addresses are:
- Addresses that are shorter are less likely to run over a line in an email and so break in some email applications (a common problem in the mixed email client environment at the University)
- Addresses can be easily shared in some applications that limited the number or characters that can be used. For example SMS (Short messaging service) and Twitter both limited the number of characters that can be used in a message.
- Shorter addresses are easier to type in - for example if they are used in hardcopy printouts or need to be entered into a mobile device.
Restrictions of use
Due to branding concerns, this service is not to be used for the following uses:
- Where the link is to be used in external marketing (i.e marketing the University in any form to people not currently studying or working at the University.)
- To redirect to PDFs or other files other than HTML web pages. Redirects to pages linking to these documents should be used instead.
